Outdoor and Vocational Learning

Inspiring Confidence, Building Skills, Broadening Horizons

At OA-Nene Valley, we are passionate about delivering hands-on, practical learning that engages and inspires our students. As part of our unique offer, every child takes part in a weekly offsite outdoor learning session – completely free of charge.

Outdoor Learning Programme

Our weekly Outdoor Learning Programme is designed to help young people develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and practical life skills in a natural and adventurous environment. Activities include surfing, climbing, kayaking, mountain biking and a range of other outdoor pursuits that encourage personal growth and a sense of achievement.

Our programme is constructed to support students' personal, social, and emotional development through hands-on activities in nature. Whether it’s exploring woodland environments, engaging in team-building challenges, or developing practical life skills, these sessions provide valuable opportunities to grow, reflect and thrive in a unique setting.

In addition to being exciting, these experiences are carefully structured to support our students' emotional wellbeing, physical health and social development. We are proud to make outdoor learning an essential part of our offer, giving every young person the chance to explore new challenges, build positive relationships and thrive.

Gauntlet Auto Project – Ramsey

In addition to Outdoor Education, we offer valuable vocational learning through our weekly partnership with the Gauntlet Auto Project in Ramsey.

Each week, students attend the Gauntlet Auto Project in Ramsey, where they gain valuable mechanical and engineering skills. Here, students gain real-world mechanical skills, from basic vehicle maintenance to hands-on engine work, developing their practical abilities, problem-solving, and career readiness in a supportive, professional environment.

  • Understand how vehicles function
  • Work safely with tools and equipment
  • Develop problem-solving and vocational skills
  • Explore potential career pathways in mechanics and engineering

This supportive and professional environment brings learning to life for students with an interest in hands-on, technical work.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – Year 11

In Year 11, every student at OA-Nene Valley is entered into the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. This nationally recognised programme challenges students to:

  • Develop new personal and physical skills
  • Volunteer in their community
  • Plan and complete an overnight expedition

Taking part in the DofE Award builds resilience, teamwork, leadership and a real sense of accomplishment, qualities that stay with students for life and support their journey beyond school.

Our Commitment

These outdoor and vocational programmes are central to our vision at OA-Nene Valley. We believe that by offering students meaningful, alternative learning experiences, we can support:

  • Personal growth and wellbeing
  • Practical and vocational skill development
  • Confidence, independence and aspiration

Every young person deserves the chance to thrive and at Olive, we make it happen.
